Regular Dental Checkups
At Ashley Family Dental, we always remind our patients to brush their teeth and floss correctly and regularly. But these things are still not enough. Checking Your Teeth
The first thing we do is take a look at the state of your teeth. We will look for any signs of tooth decay, cavities and damage. We’ll also look for plaque and tartar on the teeth which can lead to further damage if not treated. Plaque is the sticky, clear layer of bacteria on the teeth which can be removed through brushing. But sometimes they turn into tartar, which is more difficult to remove.
We’ll check on your tooth fillings to see if there’s any damage, so we can fix them too.
In addition, we will also make sure that your teeth and bite are aligned properly. If they’re not, then we can offer orthodontic solutions to put our teeth back into their proper alignment. The good thing about regular visits to your dentist is that these alignment problems can be detected right away and given the most appropriate solution.
Checking Your Gums
Once we have evaluated the health of your teeth, we will take a good look at your gums. We always watch out for any signs of gum disease so that we can offer solutions as early as possible. We will take note of any changes in the gums that cover your teeth, so that problems like receding gums can be addressed. We will also look for signs of bleeding in the gums as well.
We generally use a special dental tool to measure the space between your teeth and your gums. When your gums are healthy, these spaces are very shallow. They can become deeper when there’s a problem.
Other Points of Concern
When you visit for your regular checkup we will also evaluate the condition of any dental appliance you may have in your mouth. For example, we can look over your aligners and braces or check the condition of your dental implants.
Our dentist will also check your face, neck, lymph nodes, and lower jaw joints. These areas may show signs of problems which we can then fix at the earliest opportunity. These areas may even show signs of cancer, which should be attended to immediately.
